Frequently asked questions

Key arrangements

For flats in St Mary's Street, Bailie Fyfe's Close and Cowgatehead we try to post keys minimum 2 week prior to arrival once the security deposit has been paid. If this is not possible, then meeting on the day of arrival will be arranged. Webstersland is different because it is in a gated community so the key is left in a secure location at the flat.

Check in and Check out

Unless special arrangements have been discussed, check in time is after 2pm and check out time is 11am. Bags can usually be left in the flat until 2pm, just let us know. Often late check out is no problem either, but only if arranged with us.

Security deposit

We request a security deposit of £50 which is fully refundable on the condition the flat is not found to need any special cleaning or repair. This means normal cleaning is included, but things like stains for example may need a special spot cleaning service. Common sense prevails on this one - if the flat is respected then the deposit is refunded! Please note this decision is at our discretion. We much prefer to maintain a good relationship with our guests but sadly very occasionally we have found a need to enforce this rule.

Linen / cleaning service

All linen and towels are provided for your stay. If your stay is longer than a week then a linen/towel change is included. Any further cleaning can be arranged directly with the housekeeper at £20 per hour. (she can do most things in a hour - she's that good!) Contact us for details.

Parking

Mostly - forget it! (Edinburgh is famous for its militant approach to ticketing cars.) But if you must, there are a number of options. We can offer a free parking space in Leith (15m bus, 40m walk) where you can leave your car for the duration. Contact us for details. Alternatively there are plenty of pay-and-display parking spaces in Edinburgh at the cost of £1.60 per hour. In addition there are several NCP car parks near the centre.

Extra touches - special occasions.

We can pretty well do anything to your request (within reason) We're not Changing Rooms or anything but can certainly provide any touches you think will make the difference for a special occasion.

Disabled access

For wheelchair users: we don't have any flats on the ground floor or with lift access, apologies for this. If you have mobility issues then St Mary's street on the first floor would be your best shot.

Getting here and away

Airport
Every 15 mins an Airport bus runs into the city (Number 100) They terminate at Waverley train station.
Getting to Webstersland
There are winding streets and steep hills between Waverley Station and the Grassmarket. It is a 15-20 minute walk but if you have luggage I would suggest the easiest way to get there would be by taxi.
A taxi from Waverley should cost around £4. Just ask the driver for 'Webstersland on West Port' and they'll take you right to the front gates.
Getting to Cowgatehead
Similarly, if you fancy the walk to the Grassmarket its quite pleasant. Otherwise ask a taxi driver for Cowgatehead. Number 4 Cowgatehead is directly opposite Candlemakers Row.
Getting to Bailie Fyfe's Close and St Mary's Street
Both have less hills to tackle, and they are both about 5-10 minutes walk from waverley.

Shopping advice

The most easily accessible shopping mall is St James Centre at the East end of Princes Street. Another is Ocean Terminal in Leith (Royal Yacht Britannica, Vue cinema). Or travel by train to South Gyle for the Gyle Shopping centre. Town itself - High end shopping includes Maltrese Walk, Harvey Nicols and George Street. For high street stores Princes street is the most central shopping hub. Many people enjoy a day trip to the stores of Glasgow. Many of the boutique type shops are clustered around the Old Town area and Cockburn street.

Supermarket stores

Big supermarkets are a short drive away from centre. Options are Sainsburys at Cameron Toll Shopping Centre, Tesco on Broughton Road, 24hr ASDA in Leith, Sainsbury's at Meadow Bank. If walking, there's M&S on Princes street, or Tesco Metro at South Bridge.

Small Convenience stores

St Mary's Street
At the top of the street there is a newsagent for immediate supplies. There is a co-op / small supermarket down St Mary's Street, turn left and straight on for 5 minutes.
Bailie Fyfe's Close
In addition to the newsagent at the top of St Mary's Street, there is another up the Royal Mile and right at the lights (across the road)
Webstersland
Best bet is going to Lothian Road for the Sainsbury's and the Tesco Metro (5 mins walk) There is a small newsagent in the Grassmarket for immediate supplies.
Cowgatehead
Small newsagent right across the road, otherwise, as Webstersland directions.
